Search Engine Optimization Basics For Newbees – On Page Optimization

Friday, April 10th, 2009

I have written about the most talked about concepts of Search Engine Optimization however in this blog I would be centering around the SEO basics.

There are a few pre-requisites that one should consider when considering Internet Marketing campaign of a website or if one is seeking Internet marketing professionals to devise a strategy for promotion of a website. It is necessary that you should know these factors when you are seeking Organic SEO of your website.

What is Organic SEO?

Organic SEO is all about propelling your website on the natural Search Engine Results. The results that are displayed on the Search Engine Result Pages, when one punches in the keywords on the Search Engine to seek the results. An Internet marketing professional devises strategy which levels up a website on the Result Pages for those search keywords. The screenshot above gives you a clear description about what I am referring to. The organic SEO further involves two necessary practices that are carried out to leverage the websites on Search Engine Result Pages.

These are subdivided in two sections:-

  1. On Page SEO.
  2. Off Page SEO.
On Page SEO involves tweaking that a SEO professional does to your website itself. This is a localized activity and it involves certain hardcore optimization exercises that are carried out to optimize your website for the given keywords. This includes checking and complementing the website for certain essentials which make website agree to the Webmaster guidelines issued by Search Engines. Usually, Internet Marketing experts optimize website for Google Webmaster guidelines. Refer below for a few such pre-requisites:-
1. Website Sitemaps :- When a Search Engine spider crawls through a website it uses the siutemaps as its navigation pack. These sitemaps are added to the root directories of the website. A sitemap (if already present on  a website) can be reviewed by entering the following in the URL bar of your browser:-

www.domainname.com/sitemap.xml

The XML sitemap is mainly accepted by Google Search Engine Spider. Sitemap needs to be updated time and again as your website is updated for new pages or new modules. An XML sitemap can be prepared by using third party websites like www.xml-sitemaps.com.

A second type of sitemap is preapred for Yahoo search engine spider. These sitemaps are called as Yahoo text sitemaps.

2. Robots.txt – Every site has the authority of controling the spiders and the robots that visit the site as an agent from a search engines. The behaviour of these can be controlled by programming the Robots.txt file.

You can easily block a particular spider to crawl through your site. I have already written about the NOODP tag in a previous blog. Similar kind of crawl setting can be done by apt programming the Robots.txt file. Having a Robots.txt file on your website ensures that the website homepage gets cached frequently. Moreover you can also leash the robots from crawling into the directories which you do not want to leave at Robots dispoal, by blocking the robots to crawl through them. I will be writing more about programming the Robots.txt files in detail later.

3.Content Optimization – It is very necessary that your Internet Marketing agent optimizes your content for the right keyword density and the marketing punch which makes the internal links clickable and further allows the percoaltion of the link juice and the Pagerank in your inner pages.

I’d rather stress on the Keywords density more. The robots crawl through the HTML text of the website determining the redundancy of the keywords and the frequency with which they appear in a website. This helps them to determine the relevance of the content on a website. One should make sure that the keywords that are being targeted under the Internet Marketing Strategy for a website must be plenty in a content.

4. Internal Linking -Internal Linking and Siloing, I have detailed on this in a previous blog again. But more so, I am still more than enthusiastic to go miles about it. The internal linking and siloing is basically a part of the website architecture and analysis that must be done in the begining of a website sketch up. However, I personally feel that there is never a wrong time if you are willing to put your silos right.

You should always know which pages are your money pages where you will be regularly updating the content and adding more research and development. Why? Because if you are seeking good revenue generation through your website then you must always try to have most of the website pages directing the links to the money pages. The internal linking strengthens your website’s money pages importance.

Its quite similar to a referrral program, where the websites og HIGH PAGE RANK link to your website and pass on the link juice to your website. Similarly, the internal linking allows the flow of link juice to your money pages. It is very necessary that you sketch an off page sitemap to conisder siloing and internal linking properly.

5. W3C Check – Checking your website for the World Wide Web Consortium guidelines is always a wise step as it keeps your website into the good faith of the search engines. I have always felt that agreeing to all possible well established standards of web development keeps your website afloat on the Search Engine Pages and adds propelling buoyancy to your pages. There are several W3c validation checkers that are available which help you determine your website’s W3C validation.

6. Title Tag Optimization – The title tags are very improtant if you want to make sure that your website gets clicked the most whilst you still appear on the first page of the Google for a certain keyword. A title tag in HTML of a website looks like this :-

You should try put in
the most targeted keywords in these title tag, this not only leverages your website’s rank for the keywords in the title tags but also makes the probability of you getting clicked more OVER the competing website’s better.

Frankly speaking, I belive that simply using title tags like

London

is being simply stupid. Smart ass On Page Optimizers would rather use Title tags like

London

The latter title tag, is what you see in the Search Engine Results. Now obviously, a human with a thoughtful mind would always click on the latter Title more as compared to the penultimate one. However, one can always consider having a title like the first example for the homepages. Because this definetely adds authority to the keywords punched in the title and screams out loud to the Search Engine Spiders that this website stands optimized for the mentioned keywords.

7. Meta Tag Optimization - Meta tag optimization has been taken up in detail earlier in a blog of mine. I’d rather leave you guys with a simple Internal Link for juicing up the concerned page. :D So follow this link to read more about Meta Tag Optimiation. ;)

8. Image Optimization – Images are an inseperable part of the modern day webpages. Apart from tweaking the HTML of a website, the Images on the website can also be rightly tweaked for better Search Engine Results. The same can be done by :-

  •   Adding right Alt text tags to the Images. The alt tags, when carry the keyword for which the pages are being optimized give those keywords the authority of the rich componenet – Image File – which has been embedded in the HTML skeleton with the associated Alt Text tags.
  • Choosing the file name wisely can also add more to your Image Files. If you choose the file name as English-Language-school-London.jpg instead of img123.jpg this is certianly going to add a difference to the keyword authority linked to a website.
  • Having a right Image Title definetely boosts up the keyword authority too.
  • Linking the images to the right pages also boosts up the authority of the linked page. Suppose the Alt Text added to an Image is English Language School London. now the linked page London-Schools.html wihen linked with the image would boost the webpage’s relevance for the keywords.

9. URL Structure – The .htaccess file is a playground for PHP web developers who consider SEO from the start. According to the Google guidelines for the Webmaster it is always better to have a page with the URL something like this:

www.domainname.com/search/english-language-schools-london.html

rather than having a URL seeming something like:

www.domainname.com/searchschools.php

The initial form of the URL has the related keywords in it and gives a website more mileage to a website over the latter URL form.

10. Anchortag Optimization – Having right anchortags along with the Internal Links plays a good role in letting the flow of link juice into the linked pages. Internet Optimiation experts should make sure that the Anchor tags must have the keywords as the Anchor tags and must be relevant enough for the linked pages.

So next time when you are going to start off with picking up a Internet Marketing Agency to do the SEO of your website, make sure that you do consider the above basic checklist for On Page Optimization. I will be writing more about the Off Page Optimization checklist in the next post.

Cheers! :)

Page Rank Sculpting with No Follow and Internal Linking

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Deciding what pages you actually want to rank higher on Google is a crucial step if you are considering search engine optimization for a website . Why? Because it is in the nature of Search Engine Algorithm that the Page Rank of a website gets distributed amongst all the links on the silos in set equated proportions.

To simplify, lets start thinking from the point of view of a search engine spider that is visiting a random website on a random day.

Mr. Spidey visits your website and sits on the homepage – what it sees is – the links (along with anchor tags), the HTML text in its bare form leaving out the graphics but the alt text tags. These links are like tunnels to the spider and its free to crawl through all the tunnels that are present on the homepage of your website. The spider records the relevance and carries it back to the search engines where the relevance is measure in accord with the Search Engine Algorithm . What follows next is what you see in the Search Engine Result pages in the form of the indexing of your website’s pages on the Search Engine Result pages.

What could be frustrating is when the pages you actually want to index DO NOT get indexed.

OR

If the pages you want to rank higher DO NOT rank higher. However, the other less significant pages DO rank well.

Realistically, the links are like valves which allow the PR to sink into the website index. There could be endless reasons why your website’s significant pages haven’t been indexed on the Search Engine.

One of the most common reason is the fact that many websites have a link which shows the ‘print version’ of the pages. Now, ideally the spider crawls through the pages out of innocence and records the duplicate ‘print version’ pages and when it carries both the versions of page back to the search engine. The search engine algorithm refuses to enlist the content because of duplicate nature of the content.

So how exactly can this issue be resolved?

Answer is.. By defining the Silos in your website . I’ve already blogged about advantages of Silioing and website silioing for optimization of websites in a previous blog.

Clearly, there is no point letting the pages of your website like Disclaimer and Terms Of Use rank instead of the REAL MONEY PAGES?!

To make it easier, lets assume you have a website which adds daily Search Engine Updates to a section called ‘SEO Updates’ and you have a content writer or a copywriter who prepares the daily copy of the updates section with efforts of making it keyword rich and relevant enough for the search engines to rank it well. You would definitely want the pages under this section (Silo) ‘SEO Updates’ to rank well and you might as well use a contextual affiliate program like Kontera, Ad Brite or Ad Words to get some good money off it too! So now it is really necessary that this section ranks well and most of the pages are indexed well on the Search Engine Result Pages.

Its all about marking the pages that you think are the most relevant and would fetch you enough love from the search engine. Once you are done with the Silioing you can easily decide the preference of the pages and then accordingly form the Internal Linking on the website to let the Pagerank flow. As, I mentioned in a previous post, Internal Link Building is as important as one way link building.

This process on a whole is called Pagerank Sculpting.

For a better understanding lets consider a page which has a page rank of 1 and it has a 100 internal links to the different pages on the page. According to Dan Thies of SEO Fast Start   , each link gets a percent of the Page Rank.

Now if you clearly know what pages you want to be indexed more dearly or to be ranked better on the Search Engine Result Pages then you can always adjust the valves in such a fashion where you can stop-cock the unwanted pages by using the ‘No Follow’ attribute in the links that you provide on a particular page to maintain the information ventilation.

So using No Follow for PageRank scultping ensures the following:-
  1. The user to you
r website can still follow the links which refer to the relevant inner pages.
  2. The Page Rank sinks into your website’s index at your will. (preferance to the money pages)
To sum up easily, the no follow attribute when used for forming the Internal Linking in the website helps great deal in sculpting the Page Rank for the different Web Pages in a website. For having a better understanding about the penetration of the Page Rank on the level of the website index you can use a tool called PageRankBot which will help you analyze the PR penetration.

Page rank sculpting is a very important aspect of Link Building Services. So if you are considering to buy a one way link building plan, please feel free to drop us a line or two. :)

Advantages of RSS – Reaching far with Real Smart Scribing

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) has sped up information sharing on World Wide Web. In early 90′s when the webmasters had the rising concern of syndicating there content on the net with other related websites which would enable more reaches to there e-repositories, RSS was developed in Apple Dome.

The RSS in today’s age of internet can be related to the Pigeons of bygones. RSS feeds are generated frequently from the fountains of frequently updated modules of a webpage in form of parsed XML. This XML contains the updated information. The nature of RSS feed is such that it automatically updates when a new content is added and this feed can be subscribed by a reader on his RSS reader and then read later.

The blogs comes packaged with this handy feature and this has lead to the popularity and sudden expansion of the Blogosphere.

It is a good idea to have a RSS feed generated on your website for the content that is worth sharing and what you feel might interest and attract a huge lot audience to your web page.

These days, sites like Technorati, Stumble Upon and Reddit – in order of ease of use according to me – are the libraries of these Blogs. These websites allows a user to subscribe to these blog with there RSS feeds and then allow a rating system where one can rate the blogs.

The new buzzword is with Monetizing RSS. What could be better than earning revenue along with enjoying superfluous traffic to your web domain?

Feedburner has made it possible. Post acquisition by Google, Feedburner now presents a feature where one can monetize the feeds burned with Feedburner using Ad Sense.

Once important thing while you are Syndicating your content with some other site it is useful to ask the other site to provide a link back to your website so that you reserve the authority for the Originality of your content. This prevents the MORE AUTHORITATIVE website to farm your content and display it as a part of there web page while they get indexed on the search engine results.

Usually it is preferred to prepare a different content which represents the original content just like a snippet – and then syndicating that snippet. One should always make sure that these snippets have a link back to the original content so that the credits remains reserved to the original content.

All Search Engine optimization experts know that coming straight from the authoritative content repositories – RSS feeds are more reliable than those annoying E-mails and the ease of subscribing complete content along with the images in a simplified form with the added advantage of monetization has truly made RSS feeds the Real Smart Scribing. How I wish! My local supermarket also had a RSS feed running which would help my mom decide the months Shopping List without much ado..

The Chartered E-Barter – Category wise RSS Exchange

Friday, March 13th, 2009

One day I was sitting back in front of my PC staring at my his screen helplessly. My office colleague Santosh is a man with million idea bulbs in his head and when we start discussing about Blog Promotion and Money Making Tricks Online, we go overboard with our discussion only to end up even more puzzled.

Further follows the restlessness. I spent hours that day – confused – We had a long conversation about RSS exchange and its advantage.

Just then Santosh shot his question – “What if we start generating RSS feeds from a Blog Category Wise?”

“Wouldn’t it help the Blog to have a myriad of categories with quality content on each category?”

“And then later maybe we can use it to Exchange the RSS feeds with the related websites?” – I added.

Heh, by default, its always been me who nailed the final thought which had the gist to the rest rotwang we crap together. (you gotta accept this Santosh) :D

Okay back to the topic now, what I meant with the category wise RSS feed is that suppose there is a site www.me.com with categories as follows:-

1. Unique Category A
2. Unique Category B
3. Unique Category C

The Ideal blog will start generating the RSS feeds particularly for each category rather than for the WHOLE BLOG!

So the RSS FEEDS would be like

1. RSS Feed for Unique Category A
2. RSS Feed for Unique Category B
3. RSS Feed for Unique Category C

Now for the Barter – which is the essence of the Internet revenue generation model followed by Search Engine Optimization Gurus.

There is a second website www.you.com

This website has the content related to my blog’s Unique Category A. So I will provide a Deep link in my Unique Category A for that website. And as I give them a back link I get the Moolah for it. :)

Usually, a well thought blog model is a well thought revenue model.

Now, due to the category-wise feed generation nature of my blog. My Blog will have excellent distribution rate around the whole wide web.

This increases the chances for My Revenue generation over the chances of Revenue generation of any such website, which doesnt have such Category Wise listing.

The Bottom Line Being – “Content Is King.”

You got unique content which appeals to masses on your Blog?

You could be making PHAT CASH!

So are you looking to create Category-wise RSS feeds for your blog without minimal PHP and other coding headaches?

Click here – I have found a way.

Thanks to Feedburner! :)

How to research keywords for Search Engine Optimization?

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

To begin with a Search Engine Optimization campaign you must know what a Keyword is.

A keyword is a word that is targeted by the Search Engine Optimizers to proceed with the Search Engine Optimization campaign. It is the word that is entered by the Searcher in a search engine that yields Results in the Search Engine Result Page.

So… Ideally speaking you should plan the keywords very carefully. On each keywords, depending on its validity there is a certain amount of competition. For instance there may be a site called www.mywardrobe.com. This site may have 10 keywords. Ideally, the keywords with less competition are targeted first. It all boils down to the Search Engine Analysts instincts and a well planned SEO strategy.

So how exactly can you Research the Keywords? What Keywords must you target?

Um, there are a thousand websites that offer a Search Engine Research Tool. But I personally rely on Google! Because Google is the most used Search Engine around the world. So what you do is Go to this link

And start the analysis of the keywords in order to see the competition and then decide your SEO strategy. Easy! Is it not?

Eh! Not really. This is not the end of SEO. Now, you start with the jorting down of the documentation for the Strtaegy that u would follow to bring your site in the Top 10 Search results on the SERP (search engine result page).

We will talk more about the further startegy in the coming posts. Till then…Adios. :)
