Mo Relevance Mo Pagerank – Still No Link Juice?

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Year 2010, since Caffeine was fielded in by Google, there was an element of selection in the new algorithm. Survival of the freshest and relevance is the way Google prefers to grade the websites. You got a website which regularly pumps in new content every quarter of the day, you have your meal ticket to a steady monthly earning. Google decided to give more weight to relevant content over the backlink profile.

For long now, Matt Cutt’s team has been working on negating spam and doorway pages off Google’s Index. Almost an year ago when it was pretty easy to get some powerful backlinks to a one page site for propelling it on the top of Search Engines, webmasters with thick and relevant websites used to feel ridiculed due to this unfair selection. Well now, its not the same, a one page website is rare to find on top pages of Google. Blog farms, Auto blogs, Blog wheels etc were all dropped like hot cakes.
Google’s Caffeine emerged ever smarter than oldschool algorithm. Pagerank is now bestowed only upon the websites, which are able to produce relevant content and have a good readership / user retention rate.
Recent Google Pagerank update, carried a secret message for the bloggers who make money off their blogs selling blog reviews and text link ads — “Do not link to the websites which are not relevant for your site theme!”. Bloggers, who were selling blog reviews to totally unrelated websites, saw that their Google Pagerank dipped low.
Google Pagerank is the New Relevance
Pagerank as it seems today reads a website’s relevance for its theme. What it means is that when you go for getting text links you can consider Pagerank as a criterion for determining Link Relevance. However the strength of link will be determined by the traffic that flows through that link.
Cherrypicking The Right Backlinks For Your Website
There are several tools that come handy in selecting the right links for your website. In most of our link building efforts we use Opensiteexplorer for cherry picking the right links for most link building efforts. Alexa rank is not a very good link selection tool because Alexa rank can be easily manipulated.
Emailing For Link Acquisition – Best Method Yet
Links are precious for any aspiring webmaster. The way you acquire links could really determine which way your website would be heading. At Buckdat, the Link building services that we offer are very Search Engine Guideline centric. Paid links do not do much benefit on the front of Search Engine Ranks but for the worse, they could only get you deindexed. To us, Emailing is the best solution for acquiring the right links. It sure does take sometime to get the best benfiting links which just fit your website’s theme. But in the end, you have a win over your competitors who consider buying links online.
What Google Says About Paid Links?
To add more to it, you might wanna have a look at the following link. Google clearly states that trading links is not an evil but a legit aspect of web economy. Google advices that if you are purchasing paid links for your website, make sure that you have following in place:-
  1.  rel=”nofollow” attribute to the tag for all the paid links that you purchase.
  2. Paid links purchased must be redirected to an intermediate page that is blocked from search engines with a robots.txt file.
So if you are still considering Pagerank as a metric for selecting links to your website, you are heading fast to a steep fall.
Have a look at this page here again. This page has been around for a while on Google’s support pages, but a lot of us never noticed it.
I hope this post would change the way you grade backlinks. The real link juice is not pagerank, but a sum of traffic, content relevance for your website’s theme, domain authority along with pagerank. So get wise and make sure that you follow the correct link building guidelines if you wanna stay ahead of the competition.

A Foray Into Traffic Hijacking On Shopping Portals

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Yesterday, while chit chatting on a certain forum, I met an interesting blackhat internet marketer whose profile read something like this:-

Handle – TrafficPimp

Interests – Hijacking Traffic And Pimping It Bigtime

Location – Germany

Website – [obscured]
Well, I read a few forum posts by this fellow and decided to take it to the next level. I added him up on my ICQ list and when we started talking I was surprised to know what he was telling me….

I found out that fella made close to 6K Pounds a week by hijacking traffic from some highly populated German Shopping Portals. Looking at the portals closely, I found that these portals were infested with  advanced DOM iFrame and the innocent creditcard-ready traffic was actually visiting the iFramed sites instead of the original shopping site.

The iFramed sites were mostly Amazon & eBay shops which were being used to bait traffic. So while the visitors thought they were shopping on these credible portals they were actually doing transactions on spammed sites.

Here is a short excerpt from the chat:-
Hijacker - we have a huge networks of sites accross germany that we get our traffic from
Us - Ok you own them?
Hijacker - well, its a bit complicated, kind of involves some flash programming/javascirpt and server side app
Hijacker - since we have loads of sources / sites, we have built a system to control traffic
Hijacker - we dont want a ban hammer on a UG that took us 5k euros to establish
Hijacker - UG = a company
Hijacker - the php side of things server side is done by on partner of mine, the guy is a cryptography graduate & hes php nerd
Hijacker - I take care of the flash/js + development of the sites, and we have another 3 that do the admin part of stuff, phone calls to aff manages, etc
Us - I see
Hijacker - Im always looking for new revenue possibilities
Us - so in a way you hijack traffic? lol
Hijacker - hehehhe yea in a sense, yes
Us – I see, but IMHO, this traffic wouldnt convert much?
Hijacker - well to be honest, the conversion rates are low, but the way we have setup, we have been getting paid for over a year…also traffic amount is huge, doing about 3-4k clicks per day per program
Hijacker - so it adds up quite a bit, I make close to 6K pounds per week from some UK hosted programs.
Us - well I am surprised how u can make such huge loads from such non-commited traffic, really!!
Hijacker - and these people are buying stuff at ebay and amazon, 5k clicks a day will bring u 3k a month (euro)
Hijacker - I have reports for over a year that proves all of it
Us - can you get US traffic too?
Hijacker - why would u need? 95% of our traffic is german….
Us - I am thinking of reselling it. How much does it cost?
Hijacker - well, right now, traffic is hijacked from a load of sites, theres no filtering at all
Hijacker - they are all german based. its great for Alexa though
Hijacker – brb

The hijacker also revealed German websites which he was using to bait traffic and by looking at the website, no one could tell that there is an iFrame injected in the website. Alexa rank of these websites were within 600 and I am sure that even if 2% off the traffic converted, the smart-asses would be making close to seven or eight grands a week.

At Stanford, there has been several studies regarding iFrame hijacking and you may very often see websites which are restricted by Google when you try visiting these websites by clicking on Search Engine Results…

Such web destinations are often termed as interwebs and the red screen you see above is symbolic of a typical iframed malware website which has been blocked by Google for user access. Mostly these gape-holes of malware are due to inept file uploading software security.
Earlier, Cnet did a blog post about clickjacking and Elinor Mills mentioned the following:-
“What if you reached to grab a newspaper out of a news stand and you found a rock in your hand instead? How about opening the front door to a grocery store and ending up on a boat? This sounds like a Matrix movie, but the virtual equivalent of this is real and poses one of the most serious new risks on the Internet, according to Jeremiah Grossman, chief technology officer and co-founder of Whitehat Security.”
These new age iFrame injects are way smarter when it comes to coding, they would NOT lead a person seeking online store on a boat but to a store which is privately hosted to exploit the credit card ready traffic.
You might want to read a post that we did earlier about how Rx Spammers spammed university sites with Viagra and Tramadol spams. These websites can still be seen on Google Search Engine Result pages when you search for the keyword “Online Viagra”.

Spammers Attack University Websites, Google Shows Strange Spam Results

Friday, January 8th, 2010
Today while Searching Google for the keyword “Buy viagra online” we saw around 8 university websites appearing on top 10 of Google.

Amongst the websites hacked, University of Dakota’s Chemistry department subdomain appeared on the Search Engine. When clicking on the results, the pages redirect to canadian-drugshop.com.

Similarly, there were several other University websites which still appear on top of search engines when searching for the keyword “Buy Viagra Online” which include University of dakota’s Chidren department, Chemistry department, Univeristy of Miami (law school), Truett Mcconell College, Southern Illinois University, Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week website and several other’s appeared on the Search Engines.

These pages were set to FOOL the Google robot and it seems that there is some serverside cloaking done on these university websites to redirect the users to Fly-By-Night pharmacies. The strange thing about this redirect was that when we tried accessing these domains by visiting the Original Websites, the pages seemed to fuction normal, but when we tried clicking on Google Search Engine results, these pages redirected us to the Viagra Pharmacies. A few websites didn’t even had the redirect set properly & showed a sign of “Please Stand By” JPG image. It seemed like nasty work of serverside hacking along with Xrumer link building tricks to spam the Search Engines.

A Google Custom search on Ohio Wesleyan University site also showed that their chemistry subdomain was hacked by spammers and they made these subdomains redirect to their Online Pharmacies.

Some other websites included, World Moment For Global Democracy – www.wmgd.net website. All these websites have been appearing on the Search Engine since long now and questions Google’s Caffeine upgrade which was designed to index out the spam results faster than ever.

With the hacking and cloaking done on these reputable website’s server, there is not much that Google could do, but Google’s organic spam filter experts and Matt Cutt’s Spam Buster team ought to check this out.

Search Engine Reputation On Google Suggest – Are You Safe?

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Search Engine Reputation Management cases saw a steep rise in the year 2009. With websites like Ripoffreport and Complaintsboard growing up in their Alexa rank and Search Engine Authority.

Apart from Search Engine Result Pages where Search Engine Reputation Management is carried out, patterns of malice for corporate names can also be seen on Google Suggest tool. While one can carry out ‘granular SEO’ to remove negative results from the Search Engines, the tough job is when one type in their domain name on Google Search Box and Google Auto Suggest throws down the negative keywords, suggesting end user the most searched keywords!!
To explain better, here is a screenshot:-

So as you see in the above case, the granular SEO work can NOT be used. Google suggest works on the past data of Search Trends. If you are logged in your account, this data is fetched based on your past searches however if you are not logged in the keyword suggestion is cascaded out of the Search Trends.

You may read more about Google Suggest on the official Google Suggest Page.

These Search Trends are derived by the number of searches running on a daily basis on Search Engines. Solo SEO is not at all effective for sorting out this aspect of Search Engine Reputation Management. A massive branding drive along with a few other viral promotional tweaks is whats needed to out-do this issue on Search Engines.

I have read a number of posts on this aspect and have seen that Search Engineers still suggest carrying out blogs, Press Release drive et cetra to overcome the problem. When put more simply, solo SEO can not possibly affect the Search Engine Trends there is a lot more groundwork needed to be carried out for eradicating negative Google Suggest keywords.

Eariler, even Michael Gray had blogged about a major problem with Google Suggest’s filter which shows up porn results when punching in a few keyword trends.
