Google Tests New GUI Feature – SERP Updates As You Type Keywords

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

After the last GUI update, where Google introduced an “everything” left hand side column, there is another GUI update that Google recently tested. I saw the update and knew instantly that there is again going to be a lot of traffic shuffling as this feature rolls out. How? Watch this video first -

As you can see above, the screen changes when the keywords are entered displaying relevant websites corresponding to each search query which is suggested by Google itself. Now, the probability of earning a click for a website for a pattern of keyword search would depend whether a website ranks well for all the keyword derivatives.  That being said, if this update rolls out, it would become necessary that the webmasters have their sites optimized for each and every keyword string derivative to have the necessary probability in the dynamic SERP Layout.

IMHO – strength of business keywords for which a website ranks would get diluted if this GUI feature rolls out and it would become imperative for the webmasters to rank for all the other alternative and derivative keywords where they dont rank yet. ‘

While Google has its share of fun working on these GUI updates, SEO services along with webmasters must prepare for this update, beforehand, to ensure that like last Google GUI update which resulted in traffic scattering, this one doesn’t proves to be another traffic sieve.

Is it Bye Bye Long tail? Or welcome Short Tail.. Only time will tell. Right now it looks like the race between the websites would now involve which website can rank well for the shortest keyword derivative.  Link Building Services and Link builders around the world might update their Anchor Text and Link Inventory something like this:-

1. Long Tailed Keyword – 10 links

2. Long Tailed – 100 links

3. Long – 1000 links?

Whats your take on this Dancing SERP test that Google performed recently? Do you see it as a cool Ajax trick or a Threat to your long tailed traffic? Well, it reminds me of the last MayDay Update.. only time will tell.

Did Google Fix The Mayday Effect On June 2nd?

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

It seems that on June 2nd, Google made an attempt to reverse the Mayday Update which was responsible for massive traffic drop in long tailed traffic throughout late May. Recently, Google also confirmed that its Caffeine Index is complete and also boasted on providing more upto date information including blog posts, forum, video and real time updates from Twitter. But after June 2nd, it seemed that the things started to settle down back to normal. (atleast for us)

Many SEOs around the world were of the opinion that the drop in traffic is due to Google’s attempt to reindex the web and it seems that the latest declaration by Google confirms just that. Talking about our own blog, we used to get over 100 uniques a day from a keyword like “Link Building Services“. Many more such keywords which were apparently high traffic keywords took a serious hit and the traffic saw a downward curve. Reason being the new Google interface which is no doubt more informative as compared to the old interface that Google had but the fact is that now Google’s search engine result pages are now more retentive as compared to the old interface and distracts the visitor by giving him information from various resources. We discussed how SEOs  and Link Building services could still take advantage of this whilst optimizing their client websites.

What does Google still lack? Keyword intelligence. Why? Imagine someone searching for a keyword “Cleaning Services”. Why is this person presented with the news? Google has turned totally daft to the fact that there are people and business owners out there who rely on it to make a living by getting discovered on its Search Engine Result Pages. When half the page is occupied by Adwords Advertisements and the rest via these real time news, blogs and pictures. There is a 10% less chance that someone would consider going on the second page for finding a more relevant site on Google. As a result — SEOs and Link Building Services will now need to be ever more strapped and technically equipped to get their client’s business websites on the top 10 page of Google.

More discussion on the above can be found in this thread on WebmasterWorld.

Is Your Website A Backlink Magnet?

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Backlinks, bloody Backlinks! Some spend a fortune on them while some get them for FREE! Yea, you read it right. When you read through what changes Google is going to introduce in future for weighing a backlink, you would be forced to rethink your backlinking strategies. If you are using a Link Building Service which mentions that building links slowly or allowing them to drip over time is the way to acquire natural backlinks, then you probably need to reconsider your options before its too late. I believe that using Link Building Service which has no clue about Natural Link Acquisition would prove to be a pitfall for you in long run.

Before, I proceed ahead with this post, I would like to highlight that I personally do not think that a link building company should totally rely on any single methodology for developing backlinks to a website – buy when you need to buy, steal when you need to steal, build what you can build and…..attract what you can attract.
Pff! – Attracting Backlinks?
Yea, some might Pff, however – fact is its not tough attracting backlinks at all. All you need is..to research your niche and understand that what information is the web missing. Now THAT seems to be like an irrelevant question to ask oneself, how the heck can web miss on something? Thinking from a prospective Googlers POV, his searchable web is limited to first couple of Search Engine Result pages.
What can one do to get on the First Couple of pages of Google? Looking at Google’s first result page – you might find the following :-
  • Sponsored Results
  • Organic Results
  • Youtube or other Video results.
  • Image Results.
  • News Updates (Press Releases)
  • and often – Real Time Updates..
Voila! Its Social Media! More than 4 options listed above can easily and efficiently be tapped via Social Media Promotions. If you have your website’s polar content seeped into social media realm, you are bound to be rewarded by backlinks or citations to your webpages.
What is Polar Content or Polar Link Nodes?
Defining polarity in layman terms – a relation between two opposite attributes or tendencies. How can this be applied to a web property? You can induce polarity on your website by developing and providing free for all unique content or features. Let me cite a few examples to explain better:-
  • A well researched whitepaper.
  • A free for all gadget / widget.
  • A groundbreaking industrial news report.
  • A downloadable resource which could interest your prospective audience.
  • Web polls.
  • and a lot more…
Development of such polar link nodes is only possible if you have a thorough understanding of your market or if you are using a link building service / link building expert who can work with you in developing this strategy.
Fielding Your Polar Link Nodes
An important resource is of no use unless it has a strong media to propagate it. Once you are done setting up Polar Link Nodes, its time to think how can you inject it into Search Engine Result Pages? What must you do to bring it into focus? How can you drive traffic to it? There are more than one ways on how you can promote your polar link nodes on web:-
  • Via Established High Traffic Industrial Blogs
  • Via Google News inclusion
  • Via Tweets to relevant traffic
  • Via Facebook Groups and Profiles
  • and much more….
Developing A Backlink Polar Node For Success
One very important aspect of these polar nodes are that they have a very short on-air life. If you spend 1K on producing a feature/content for your website but fail to propagate it well, then you would end up getting disappointed. When fielding your Polar Link Nodes, one should keep the following factors in mind:-
  1. They don’t last long depending on market refresh rate.
  2. They must be strategically fielded at the right time.
  3. They must be promoted amongst prospective niche traffic only.
  4. They should be fielded vial the best available platforms.
Measuring Success Of A Polar Link Node
Success of a polar node can be easily measured by comparing the before and after verticals. At Buckdat, we believe that setting up the right analytics reports helps a backlink endeavor to measure its flaws and improvise in forthcoming sessions. Due to short “on-air” life of such Polar Backlink Nodes, its very necessary that from the very moment when a media is broadcasted – extensive reporting and measurements must be carried out. Before the web gets saturated with content, there is enough time to push it that extra untapped inch and draw that extra 2K traffic to your content.
Hardest part of getting to the top of ladder is getting past the crowd at bottom – with hiring efficient and technically sound Link Building Services for your business, you can easily achieve that. If you are still stuck up with a link building service, which assures you of success by standalone directory submissions, you are definitely not getting the best bang for your buck!

Google’s Reasonable Surfer Patent To Invoke Death Of Dodgy Backlinks

Monday, May 17th, 2010

On 11th Of March 2010 – Google was granted patent for Reasonable Surfer Model. This patent is believed to come into effect gradually and revolutionize the way link building is carried out in present. If you are a SEO or link builder you probably know the word Link Juice from your daily industrial jargon. The new model would add a couple of new essential terms to the Link Building Experts dictionary – Link Weight and Link Click-Through.

The Way Google Has Been Weighing Links So Far
So far for Google – A Link Was A Link – we all know that Google has for long been hinting to put a sock in the paid PR based link trading. There are two ways how a backlinked page links to another source page:-

  1. A lesser authoritative page linking to the source webpage.
  2. A Higher authoritative page linking to the source webpage.
Here the authority is described by either Pagerank or Domain authority, primarily. Trading links based on Pagerank was discussed by us in one of the previous post, so whilst webmasters look to buy/rent links based on Pagerank, link juice feeds link authority to the source page. Whilst Pagerank was only one of the several factors that Google was using to rank websites. Trotting back, when Google became rage at Stanford, Pagerank was defined in one of the document called Anatomy Of A Large Scale Hypertextual Search Engine, it reads:-
The probability that the random surfer visits a page is its PageRank.

What Will Change With Introduction Of This Change In Link Weight Algo?
Well the answer is that Google is going to become more relevant and democratic now. Reasonable Surfer model states the following:-

A system generates a model based on feature data relating to different features of a link from a linking document to a linked document and user behavior data relating to navigational actions associated with the link. The system also assigns a rank to a document based on the model.

A link will no more be a link – every link is going to have its own dimension and value. Google is going to be more analytical about links and their origin. That being said, various attributes associated with each link are going to change and have an affect on the link quality:-

  1. Anchor Text Font, Size, commercial value of text and Color.
  2. Position metrics of a link is going to have more value now.
  3. TLDs linked in the backlinks.
  4. Type of link – Image, Text, Do follow, No follow?
  5. Traffic and Clicks achieved by the linked to site via a backlink.
  6. and many more…
To sum up – A link’s worth is going to be estimated by Google’s Algorithm, based upon the user data. How many times a link was clicked on a particular page? What caused the link to be clicked? Click-through rate of a link on a page? Nature of source document and its relevance with the link?

What Impact would Reasonable Surfer Patent have on the Paid Links?
Google is going after the sites which are thriving on link spam for now – there is a loud and clear signal about this with the new patent acquired. Once this algorithm is adapted by Google, the way a link is rated is going to see a totally different weighscale. In contrast to the earlier Pagerank model adapted by Google which said that each link going out from a webpage or a domain has equal value, now the things would change and a link’s placement and its success on a webpage is going to decide how meritorious a link is!

For the webmasters who actively engage in trading/renting links, time has come that they should think like a reasonable surfer. As for different Link Building Services and Link Building Service Providers around the world, this would mean that each and every Link Building Project would now need some extra focus and high end inventory. You can not carry on building crappy links and doing mindless submissions as once Google starts analysing the links at such granular level – its going to be a tough battle.

A link in the footer, A link in the sidebar without proper content around it, A link on Partner’s Page, A link on the resource section of a website – All such links are going to be on our Not-To-Do-List! We have tried to sum up 10 most important link building criterion in an another post on this blog.

If you are a webmaster or a website owner, make sure that you understand what Google is going after. Search Engine’s are ever evolving with their new algorithms, methods and impoverishment in roles to make sure that end user gets relevance at a click. The key is in adapting, understanding and implementing the latest updates.

PubSubHub To PuSH Google Real Time Indexing

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Mid 2009, when Google started to feel the heat due to Twitter’s Real Time Search Engine picking up the momentum, Google came up with PuSH platform. PuSH was defined as an addition to RSS and Atom feeds which is a server to server protocol and allows a user to subscribe/publish their content.

Soon after, both – Wordpress and Typepad blogs came up with plugins for PuSH technology and PushPress (for wordpress) went viral instantly. Google already integrated number of additional features to its Search Engine Result Pages for instance – Real Time Content Indexing from Twitter and this clearly indicated that Google was giving weight to the links shared on twitter and facebook – Real Time Link Building came into play and the real time shared links which carried traffic along with them are now given more weight by Google’s Algorithm.

So What Exactly Is PuSH?
An abbreviation for PubSubHubBub protocol which was launched last year. This is a server to server protocol which enables near instant (6 seconds delay) updation of content. Google plans to integrate PuSH for its real time search results.

What would PuSH mean for SEO?
PuSH would definitely mean more traffic for sites which keep updating their content regularly. So if you have a blog integrated on your website and you are like blogging every hour, you can expect rocketing traffic to your website and more Search Engine Recognition for your theme.

How Would The PuSH Content Be Graded By Google?
PuSh Content will be graded on the basis of the authority of the source website for its Theme. Google is going to select PuSH content based on the merit and trust factor that website and its content earns from Google. So in a way, this is again going to depend on the search engine crawl entirely.

PuSH would also open a new avenue for the spammers who would try to push content via this Real Time Traffic hub and Google is going to rate the source reputation and trust – post crawl to vroom the content on its HUB.

What is IM world saying about Google’s Real Time Indexing Model?
Many Internet Marketers are of a view that mixing Search Engine Results with organic has made Google’s search quality very diluted. Searching for a website which deals with a Viral Keyword pulls out lots of spammed content and unrelated tweets which have no reason to be on the first page of Google after displacing the other organic trusted sites.

Having an all together different plat form for indexing real time content would be anyday improve the searchability on Google. And what are your thoughts on this one?
