Google Local SEO has became an extremely important marketing drive for any business out there looking to rake in leads via Search Engine Result Pages. Given that Google Local Result Pages have undergone a complete facelift since 2010, its evident that there is a tough fight out there when it comes to Local Business Results on Google. This has given birth to a new vertical in Search Engine Optimization, known as Google Map Optimization.
In the year 2011, Google started off by initially wiping out a lot of faulty listings. By February, most duplicate listings that were out there got wiped out. The listings went under review and it was evident that Google was taking its Local Result more seriously than ever. We tried to evaluate a number of factors that were beneficial until 2010 but were probably going to be less beneficial in 2011.
In a recent video from SXSW, Merissa Mayer deemed Hotpot and Google Latitude as one of the most successful experiments.
Now, Hotpot being more traffic laden and handy, its obvious that Google is going to pick up citations from Hotpot to build its listings and evaluate the authenticity of a Google Local listing. Mayer mentioned that 40% of Google Local traffic is mobile and stated that mobile usage of Hotpot does surpass desktop usage at times. Recently Google already integrated Hotpot reviews in tis Local Search Engine Results.
Amongst other local ranking factors, Local Citations no doubt top the list. Only that Google’s drive to pick up local citations might take a steep divergence. How? Have you heard of recent Farmer’s Update? Here is a post by Andrew Shortland where he is comparing Quantcast data post-Farmer update. There are clearly a bunch of sites out there which clearly shows that some sites did lose their importance. Was it due to their thin nature? Or was it due to improper SEO architecture? Too early to say that.
We all know that Insider Page listings accounted for a number of listings showing up those eye-catching stars against Google Local results..well not anymore, it seems that a lot of listings lost their star ratings that they were earlier pulling up from InsiderPages. However, Bing and Yahoo still seem to be taking that info from Insider Pages.
Another important update was by Google on Duplicate Listings. If you have a number of Duplicate listings and you are still worried about what you should do with the listings that you dont deem to be important, then here is a step by step guide to it:-
- Claim the most relevant listing and start with filling out your profile. Make sure that it has the most accurate information and oh yes ofcourse the most important ranking factor for Google Local Optimization – the right LOCATION! Your location on your original listing should be extremely accurate and should be accurately posted with respect to its closeness to the city centre. Thats how Google arranges you on its Local Results.
- Claim the other listings too but do NOT delete them just yet. Make these listings just like your original listing but do not load it with all the info you would in your original listing. Just enough to make it look similar to the original listing. Slowly all your listings will merge into one and soon you will see your original listing ranking better than others. (If optimized correctly).
- Start updating your listings with correct data. Make sure that you do enroll for UBL and update your data there too. It will definitely ensure that your duplicate listings are merged.
- Once all the data becomes consistent you can now go ahead and delete the duplicate listings or leave them like that.
Before I close the post, I would like to also highlight another extremely important citation source that seem to be extremely important in the year 2011 - Geo-referenced Images – Google’s Panoramio is going to be an extremely citation point in the year 2011. Several snippers from Panoramio can already be seen to build up in the Google Local Search results.
