Are High PageRank Backlinks Overrated? – Dissecting The Mania

Google’s Pagerank technology has revolutionized the way world wide web started getting graded and trusted. That little green sign on Google Toolbar has in time became a big part of how backlinks are traded online. When a webmaster goes about acquiring links for his website, Google PageRank is the one of the most important factor to be considered followed by Alexa rank and others.

How Pagerank Became A Big Factor In Link Trading Economics?
Page-rank was named after Larry Page – the co-founder of Google (along with Sergey Brin). Pagerank was introduced as a sum of inbound links along with number of visits through those links to a page at Stanford University for the first time. Google uses Pagerank to grade a website on the scale of 10. What you see on Google Toolbar is only Guesstimated Pagerank, however, the Real Pagerank or Absolute Pagerank is regularly updated and not visible on the Toolbar.
So now, when a webmaster goes about buying links based on a toolbar Pagerank he is actually telling himself “I am going to buy this link because it has a Pagerank of 5 and its sure gonna boom my rankings. After all Google has graded this website 5 on 10?”. Thats how the Pagerank became a decider in Link Trading and started to rule the economics of link trading. Links started to be rented out on a 3 monthly, 6 monthly and Annual basis. Little or no focus was given on other MORE RELEVANT and IMPORTANT factors which need to be considered when going about acquiring links.
Google’s Take On Pagerank Trading
Just when Matt Cutts confirmed that Google is going to punish, websites which are trying to Game its algorithm by buying or trading link. There was much angst amongst the link building community when it became evident that Google was going after people looking to trade links – Andy Hagans did an angry post backlashing Google’s take on link trading.
IMHO, Google was right in taking this step as its Pagerank system was going corrupt due to Pagerank based Link Selling and Buying by webmasters. On the other hand, Link Building Services around the world which knew that Google Graded a domain’s authority based on Pagerank started to complain that Google was trying to crush Link Trading by penalizing websites which are acquiring paid links. Whilst, other link building services started off with taking up Natural Link Building Services and Link Baiting Schemes to build links organically. (The way Google Liked it!)
Does Pagerank Really Decide A Backlink’s Quality & Strength?
Have a look at Google’s Corporate Information Page. It clearly states that :-

PageRank reflects our view of the importance of web pages by considering more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Pages that we believe are important pages receive a higher PageRank and are more likely to appear at the top of the search results.

The word - Likely - clearly means that Pagerank is only one of the factors which increases the probability of your site to rank well on SERP. Pagerank is not the end all factor! Now speaking in terms of backlink acquisition, I think if your domain has an authority its automatically going to get a Pagerank and a top rank too. There are a zillion of pages on Top 10 of Google for extremely competitive terms which do not have a Pagerank.

For instance, take the keyword “Link Building services”, while our Blog ranks is PR3 and ranks on 5th page of Google for that keyword, there are websites on Page 1, which have PR 0 and PR2s.

Will High PR Links Improve Your Web Traffic?
If you are buying links for the sake of inflating your Pagerank by grabbing links from ALL high PR sites that you find – you might see your Pagerank increasing, but – What about the traffic? Would a PR8 on your site get you that traffic? Search Engine Traffic is a karma which can be gained only if you have quality and relevance on your site. So it is imperative that there is a lot to do before you jump into buying PR links for your website.
