Matt Cutts On Link Building 2010 - A *Must Read* For Link Builders

| | |
When Google Caffeine was pushed into stratosphere, we saw certain changes on Search Engine Result Pages. The Search Results started showing more real time results from Twitter, which got many SEO experts thinking as to how Google would be weighing the Tweets/Real Time updates now? Would Search Engines be giving more weightage to the links shared in the tweets? What about the 'no-follow' nature of most social media links? How would Google treat those now?

Here is a quick video which Matt Cutts did post - a head shaving session - speaking about how Google treats Social Media Links.

This was the first video by Matt Cutts after the launch of Google's Caffeine and it confirms Google's stand on Links coming out of Facebook & Twitter.

Here are a few updates for Link Builders that Matt stresses upon in his video:-
  • Google treats links from FB and Twitter just like any other link.
  • Only the links from Public open profiles will be crawled by Google. (nothing new about this!)
  • .Edu and .Gov links are going to be treated like ANY OTHER LINKS from regular website. This is a MAJOR update for us and perhaps has been made vocal because Google wants to suppress the spam on .Edu and .Gov sites.
Here is another post that we did earlier which you might want to read about effect of Google Caffeine on Link Building.

Around November 2010, when Real Time Search was amalgamated with Google Results, it evident that Google will be ranking Tweets based on keywords that are associated with each tweet. For instance if you shorten a link and while sending it in the Tweetosphere, you add the relevant keywords along with the tweet sent, there is an increased chance that your tweet will appear on Search Engine Result Pages.

Amit Singhal the Google lead behind Real Time Search mentioned - "You earn reputation, and then you give reputation. If lots of people follow you, and then you follow someone--then even though this [new person] does not have lots of followers," his tweet is deemed valuable because his followers are themselves followed widely, Singhal says.

My inference from this whole gravy is that - Google is going to rate profiles on the basis of Fan Following and authority of links. So if you have your blog / website link in your Twitter Profile, the PageRank will flow from your twitter profile to the website / blog linked in the profile.

Word out to those who are seeking Twitter Followers for their Twitter profiles, blindly - "Its not about how MANY followers you have, Google rates Social Media Profiles by HOW authoritative the linked profiles are".
