Whats Wrong With The Google Search Engine Results?

The other day as I was on E-lance, I saw a project posted by a webmaster, where he was offering $500 for fixing his tag line in Google Search Results. The project read something like ‘I am tired of seeing my website’s subject line listed wrongly in the Google Search Engine Result Pages. I am seeking Internet Marketing experts who can fix my Google Subject Line?’.

We started with entering the given keyword in the Google search and found that the result page was really showing wrong results in the Search Engine Result Page.

Initially we thought that it might be a current change that the webmaster would have made to the website title and maybe the old pages are still stuck in the Google cache and its returning the title tag of the old pages. However when we ran a check to see when last did Mr. Spidey cache the website, we were amazed to see that the website was cached the very day itself.

Suddenly a thought hit me, I wondered if Google is drawing these results from some 3rd party authority website which is overruling the current website Title. And I was right. I ran a search in the DMoz directory and found that the website was listed there with the same name as follows:-

Now the issue was How to resolve this problem of invalid results appearance in Google?
The way Google draws its results is by generating snippets from the website in question itself and other websites as well. Due to the widespread popularity of the DMoz directory, these days a lot many websites are registered in DMoz. Moreover the Google Directory is now DMoz directory.
As a result the title with which a certain website is registered in DMoz also effects the result snippets on Google Result pages.
I found the answer in the Google Sitemap Blog.
Google long included a control for the same and that is addition of a simple meta tag to the HTML of website as follows:-

Adding this Meta tag added to your HTML would completely prevent the Google Spiders from drawing the content snippets from such open directories.  No More Invalid Results! Gee! that’s an easy way to buck $500 isnt it? :D
